Our mission- is to improve the quality of life for adults with a learning disability - through providing daily purposeful activities in horticulture where they can thrive, grow in confidence and integrate into the local community in a happy and safe learning environment.
‘ Your Choice ~ Your Life ‘
Our Values- at Thistles we believe that:• People are disabled by a society that fails to accommodate their individuality•Horticulture provides a valuable opportunity for therapy and personal development•All people can contribute economically and socially in the right circumstances•Promoting respect between one another creates the best environment for everyone
What we do- Thistles Market Garden is a venue for adults with a learning disability that provides daily purposeful activities in horticulture, in order to encourage skills and development and to promote social inclusion and self esteem.Thistles is based on an acre of land, 8 miles south of the market town of Boston, situated just on the outskirts of the pretty village of Sutterton. The village is served by a regular bus service from both Boston and Spalding.History - Thistles was first established in 2002 under the umbrella of Lincolnshire County Council and Social Services. It has been operating as an independent charitable co-operative social enterprise since 2015 with the support of Mr George Scattergood - who enabled Thistles to remain on the site. He generously provided land for Thistles use, at a peppercorn rent. George and his wife Jessie took a keen interest in the development of Thistles and continuance of the much needed and valued service it provides. Thistles were so pleased when George and Jessie officially opened their new building on 23rd July 2019. George (R.I.P. ) is greatly missed at Thistles but we are still gratefully supported by Jessie and family. Before retirement in 2023, Liz Judge worked at Thistles for 20 years, supported by a small dedicated team of staff and volunteers, including members of the Management Committee.
